Comic Book Day -- 2 Word Review edition

Yeah, to save some time and maybe force a little creativity out of me, I'm going to write-up these comics with a two-word limit. Let's try it out.

Photobucket

Batman and Robin #2 -- Continued brilliance

Captain America: Reborn #1 -- Lost deja-vu

War of Kings #5 -- Nerd soap

The Boys #32 -- Redeeming itself

FC Aftermath: Run! #3 -- Surprisingly good

Greek Street #1 -- Auspicious opening

Hm. I didn't think about these as hard as I wanted to, but that was still fun.

  1. Captain America: Reborn -- Man, did you hit the nail on the head. I couldn't believe it as I was reading it. I mean, it's not like Lost invented the concept by any means (hello, Mr. Vonnegut) but jesus... you can't write that shit in the wake of one of the most popular TV shows on right now using the exact same plot and think you're gonna get away with it. I'm not crazy at all about where it's going. Keep Steve Rodgers dead, keep going with Bucky as new Cap. I also hated all the "Dark Reign" bullshit that seemed really forced in.

Batman & Robin #2 -- Hell yes! This is probably the best comic you can buy right now. Everything about it kicks ass, but especially the scenes between Dick and Alfred as they discuss his theatrical background and how the role of "Batman" is akin to Sherlock Holmes or James Bond... so rad. Loved it.

Detective Comics #854 -- Meh. Art is amazing. Greg Rucka kinda sucks though.

Other than that, I've been reading Punisher MAX like it's Skittles and I'm a fat kid who loves to taste the rainbow. Sooo fucking good. "The Slavers" was balls crazy, as you said it was. I think originally I was against the MAX line version because I enjoyed his Marvel Knights run so much which was completely different. But boy was I wrong...

  2. Greg Rucka hate, huh? I see how it is. No no, that's okay, don't bother reading his cool run on Action Comics -- it's not like I was right about Punisher MAX or anything.

Speaking of, I saw that you were reading Kitchen Irish -- that's probably the weakest storyline of his run, personally speaking.

Also, I guess there's this amazing new graphic novel called Asterios Polyp? I guess the author, David Mazzucchelli, is a big deal in the indie world, or something.

And say -- what do you say to Bronsonathon 09 sometime? I'm quitting my job in the fall to focus on getting my shit together in school, so that'd be a perfect time (unless you want to come down TODAY or this week, since I don't work til Friday). In the case that you can't handle a really long trip on such short notice (pussy) let me know when's good for you.

  3. You could be right. I haven't read much by him, just what I have has been unimpressive.

"Kitchen Irish" was pretty sweet, I thought. The weakest in my opinion was actually the opening story arc of the series.

David Mazzucchelli was the artist on Frank Miller's legendary Daredevil run as well as the artist of Batman: Year One. In recent years I think, like you say, he's been doing some indie type stuff. I've heard rumblings about this, but have yet to check it out.

Unfortunately, I am working, although I'd love to say fuck it and head on down. I'll look over my schedule and see when I can get some time off. In the meantime, I just started a comics blog (found here:http://squigglylinescomics.blogspot.com/) that I sent you an invite to via e-mail if you want to contribute at all. Anyway, I gotta go... catch ya later.
